FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do I choose between 0.22 mm², 0.34 mm², 0.50 mm², and 0.75 mm² CAN bus cable?
Per CiA 303-1 (CANopen), conductor cross-section determines maximum loop resistance and bus length: use 0.22–0.25 mm² for short trunks up to 40–100 m; 0.34 mm² (AWG 22) for 100–250 m; 0.50 mm² (AWG 20) for 250–400 m; and 0.75 mm² (AWG 18) for long trunks up to 500 m at 125 kbps.
When is a 2-pair (2×2) CAN bus cable used instead of a 1-pair (1×2) cable?
In a 1×2 cable, the single pair (White/Brown) carries CAN_H and CAN_L while CAN_GND is tied to the shield or third conductor. In a 2×2 cable, Pair 1 carries differential CAN_H/CAN_L while Pair 2 (Green/Yellow) provides a dedicated isolated CAN_GND and optional +24 V / +5 V transceiver supply.
Is this 120 Ω cable suitable for CAN FD (Flexible Data-Rate) up to 5 Mbps or 8 Mbps?
Yes. Because our cellular-PE O2YS dielectric maintains a flat 120 Ω ± 12 Ω impedance from 1 MHz up to 20 MHz with low capacitance (38 pF/m) and a 4.4 ns/m propagation delay, it cleanly transmits fast CAN FD data-phase bit rates without ringing.
Why must a CAN bus be terminated with 120 Ω resistors at both physical ends?
ISO 11898-2 uses a linear bus topology where high-frequency edges travel down a 120 Ω transmission line. Placing a 120 Ω ± 1 % resistor between CAN_H and CAN_L at each physical end matches the cable characteristic impedance and absorbs reflections. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
