Application fit

Is AS/NZS 1972 right for your machine?

Semi-flexible elastomer-sheathed underground mine roadway and shaft feeder cable to AS/NZS 1972 (1.1 kV to 11 kV) with individual metallic screens.

Mine roadway & tunnel wall hangers

Suitable

Primary duty — suspended on roadway rib hangers or catenary hooks from portal to underground substations.

Fixed installation

Suitable

Fixed installation on trays, cleats and culvert brackets in underground coal and metalliferous mines.

Free-hanging vertical run

Suitable

Suitable for borehole and shaft drop feeders when supported with approved shaft cleats.

Motorised monospiral reel

Not suitable

Semi-flexible feeder construction — never wind onto dynamic crane or shuttle-car reels.

Use AS/NZS 1802 Reeling

Longwall shearer & Bretby handler

Not suitable

Too stiff for continuous flexing in longwall shearer Bretby handlers.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the scope of AS/NZS 1972 compared with AS/NZS 1802?
AS/NZS 1802 covers dynamic reeling and trailing cables that drag behind or reel onto mobile underground coal mining machines (Types 209 to 275). AS/NZS 1972 covers underground coal mining cables 'other than reeling and trailing' — specifically screened cables fixed onboard continuous miners, shuttle cars, roadheaders and personnel transporters to interconnect flameproof switchgear, cutter motors, hydraulic pump motors and longwall lighting.
When should I specify AS/NZS 1972 Type 2S instead of Type 1?
Type 1 uses heat-resistant V-90 PVC insulation and a thin 5V-90 PVC outer covering (0.8–1.5 mm) to minimize diameter inside tight machine ducts, conduits or protective hydraulic hoses, and requires external mechanical protection. Type 2S and Type 2S.3 use thermoset R-EP-90 EPR insulation and a heavy-duty HD-90-CPE elastomer outer sheath (1.8–2.5 mm, Category C1 flame retardant), allowing direct exposed installation on machine frames and longwall lighting runs without secondary hose protection.
What is the difference between individually screened and collectively screened AS/NZS 1972 cables?
Individually screened constructions (2, 3 or 4 cores from 1.5 mm² to 120 mm²) wrap each phase conductor in its own composite tinned-copper/polyester braid so any phase-to-earth fault is immediately intercepted before a phase-to-phase arc can develop. Collectively screened constructions (2 to 30 × 1.5 mm²) apply a single composite copper/polyester braid over the entire laid-up control core bundle for low-current auxiliary and control circuits.
Why does AS/NZS 1972 require cables rated above 20 A to be electrically symmetrical?
On underground coal face machinery, unbalanced phase-to-earth impedance or asymmetric core lay-up in high-current motor leads can induce circulating currents in the composite earth screens and nuisance-trip sensitive earth-leakage relays. Symmetrical three-core lay-up (with three interstitial pilots where fitted) balances mutual inductance across all three phases.
