FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

When is an Anti-Tracking (AT) outer sheath required instead of standard HDPE on ADSS cable?
On overhead transmission lines of 110 kV and above, capacitive coupling induces a high space potential on the cable surface. Where the induced electric field at the tower attachment point exceeds 12 kV (up to 25 kV), dry-band arcing across wet pollution layers can erode standard HDPE; an IEEE 1222 AT sheath prevents carbon tracking.
What is the difference between MAT, EDS, and RTS when specifying ADSS cable?
Everyday Stress (EDS, typically 16–20 % of RTS) is the continuous tension under still air at average ambient temperature. Maximum Allowable Tension (MAT, 40–50 % of RTS) is the worst-case design wind and ice load where optical attenuation and fibre strain remain zero. Rated Tensile Strength (RTS) is the ultimate mechanical breaking load.
Why do medium- and long-span ADSS cables use a double-sheath (PE inner + PE/AT outer) construction?
Preformed helical dead-end and suspension grips exert high radial clamping pressure to transfer tens of kilonewtons of axial tension from the outer jacket to the internal polyaramid yarns. The inner PE bedding sheath prevents that radial compression from deforming the PBT loose buffer tubes.
Can custom drum lengths be manufactured to match exact transmission tower span schedules?
Yes. ADSS cables are manufactured to project-specific tower-to-tower splice schedules (commonly 2,000 m to 5,000 m per drum) so joint closures always land on tension towers rather than mid-span.
