FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why is polyimide film preferred over PTFE or silicone for 10⁻¹⁰ mbar ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) ribbon cables?
Silicone elastomers outgas siloxanes that contaminate UHV optics and semiconductor wafers, while PTFE suffers cold flow and decomposes under synchrotron X-ray/electron radiation. Aromatic polyimide film achieves an outgassing rate below 10⁻¹⁰ mbar·L/(s·cm²), withstands +250 °C bakeouts, and resists 10⁷ Gy ionizing radiation.
How does 301-KAP-RIB prevent virtual leaks during vacuum chamber pump-down?
The polyimide carrier web bonding the parallel insulated conductors incorporates periodic ventilation slots and peelable conductor grooves so no dead-ended air pockets remain trapped between wires or inside crimp connectors.
Why must conductor current ratings be derated inside a vacuum chamber?
In ultra-high vacuum (below 10⁻⁴ mbar), convective air cooling is completely absent and heat dissipates only by thermal radiation and axial conduction along the copper wire. A 28 AWG conductor rated 2.5 A in free air is therefore limited to 1.5 A continuous in UHV.
How do I separate individual wires at the end of 301-KAP-RIB for Sub-D crimp pins?
Score the thin polyimide web between adjacent conductors with a clean scalpel blade over the last 20–30 mm, strip 3–4 mm of polyimide insulation with a precision thermal or blade stripper, and crimp gold-plated UHV Sub-D contacts.
