FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why is a triaxial cable required instead of a coaxial cable for femtoampere (fA) and picoampere (pA) current measurements?
In a standard coaxial cable, any bias voltage between the center conductor and grounded braid drives Ohm's-law leakage current across the insulation; in 310-PEEK50-TRIAX, the electrometer drives the inner braid (guard) to the exact same potential as the center conductor (0 V drop across the inner PEEK core), reducing cable leakage current and effective cable capacitance to near zero while the outer braid shields against EMI.
What advantages does extruded PEEK offer over tape-wrapped polyimide in UHV beamlines?
Melt-extruded virgin PEEK forms a monolithic, seamless tube with zero overlapping tape seams that could trap air pockets (virtual leaks), absorbs 5× less atmospheric moisture than polyimide during air exposure (< 0.1 %), and provides > 10¹⁵ Ω·cm volume resistivity. Each production reel undergoes sweep-frequency impedance and return-loss verification, dielectric spark testing, and dimensional inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 test certificate.
Why must PTFE coaxial cables be avoided inside synchrotron X-ray and electron beamlines?
PTFE degrades rapidly above 1 kGy of ionizing radiation and releases fluorine radicals that etch UHV beryllium windows, X-ray mirrors, and ion pumps; PEEK contains only carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and survives up to 10 MGy (10⁷ Gy). Each production reel undergoes sweep-frequency impedance and return-loss verification, dielectric spark testing, and dimensional inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 test certificate.
Which UHV connectors mate with 310-PEEK50-TRIAX?
310-PEEK50-TRIAX terminates directly into UHV PEEK- or alumina-insulated 3-lug TRB triaxial plugs, LEMO 00/0S triaxial connectors, and custom CF-flange UHV triaxial feedthroughs. Each production reel undergoes sweep-frequency impedance and return-loss verification, dielectric spark testing, and dimensional inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 test certificate.
