Specify airport GPU cable resistance to hydraulic fluids, de-icers, abrasion and reel duty using fluid-specific tests and assembly-level inspection.

Airport ground-power cables face dragging, repeated coiling or reeling, vehicle traffic and fluid contamination. Electrical suitability for 400 Hz AC, 28 V DC or 270 V DC does not establish resistance to these environmental loads. Specify the complete cable-and-connector assembly for the actual ground-support equipment.

Identify the fluids rather than specifying “oil-proof”

Phosphate-ester hydraulic fluids, aviation fuels, runway de-icers and aircraft de-icing fluids are different chemical exposures. Eastman’s compatibility guidance distinguishes materials for Skydrol service. A broad jacket label such as PUR, rubber or fluoropolymer is not sufficient evidence for every formulation, fluid concentration, temperature or duration.

  • Record the exact hydraulic fluid and fuel grades expected at the stand.
  • Distinguish runway acetate/formate products from aircraft de-icing mixtures; record concentration and temperature.
  • Specify immersion or splash exposure and any cleaning method.
  • Request results for the proposed finished jacket compound, not merely a generic polymer family.

What a meaningful compatibility test records

Agree specimen preparation, fluid condition, temperature, duration and post-exposure conditioning. Report changes in dimensions or volume, tensile properties, flexibility and visible damage using the selected method. Where needed, check the finished cable’s electrical integrity after exposure. Do not treat a single swelling percentage as proof of a safe aircraft connection.

SAE AS5756 covers a class of heavy-duty portable power cables for severe flexing. Its applicability, revision and detailed requirements must be specified for the ordered construction. Merely citing it does not establish a universal Skydrol test recipe or prove that a supplier has passed it.

Abrasion, reeling and cold handling

A laboratory abrasion result is useful for controlled comparison but is not directly convertible into years on an apron. Concrete texture, dragging distance, contamination, cable weight and reel settings matter. Check the actual dynamic temperature rating, minimum bend radius, permissible pull and connector strain relief.

A two-color wear-indicator jacket may help reveal wear if it is part of the approved design. It is not a substitute for inspection or an automatic permission to keep the cable in service. Do not assume that reversing the ends of an already worn assembly restores its electrical or mechanical integrity.

Safe inspection and replacement decisions

  • Isolate the equipment according to the site procedure before examining cuts, exposed reinforcement, crushed areas or fluid-softened jacket.
  • Check the aircraft plug, contacts, pilot/interlock circuits and termination strain relief as well as the bulk cable.
  • Follow the equipment manufacturer’s rejection and repair criteria. Do not improvise field repairs on a safety-critical aircraft connection.
  • After authorized work, verify the required electrical and interlock functions before returning the assembly to service.

A procurement package should include assembly drawings, electrical ratings, fluid compatibility evidence, reel-duty qualification and a traceable inspection plan. None of the example requirements here is a claim of measured TEBAOFLEX batch performance.
