Distinguish tactical fiber assemblies, air-blown microcables and broadcast hybrids, with connector compatibility, duct ratios and optical acceptance checks.

Tactical field reels, air-blown microduct cables and hybrid camera cables solve different installation problems. Compare the deployment method and complete interface before choosing a construction. Connector robustness, blowing suitability and electrical power capability are separate qualifications.

Tactical assemblies: compatible does not mean universal

Amphenol’s TFOCA-II family includes hermaphroditic connector designs that permit compatible assemblies to be concatenated. Confirm the exact connector family, channel count, keying, fiber type, polish and optical mapping. Legacy TFOCA, TFOCA-II and different variants must not be assumed mutually interchangeable. TFOCA-II is an Amphenol trademark, not a generic TEBAOFLEX certification.

A field reel also needs suitable strain relief, handling instructions, bend radius, environmental sealing and a link-loss budget. A laboratory crush load applied through a specified fixture does not establish that an assembly can safely be driven over by a particular vehicle on arbitrary ground.

Microduct cables: specify both diameters

Define whether a quoted fill ratio means cable diameter divided by duct internal diameter or cable area divided by duct area. For a hypothetical 5.2 mm cable in an 8.0 mm bore, the diameter ratio is 65%, while the area ratio is 42.25%. These are not interchangeable percentages.

Diameter ratio is only one input to blowing suitability. Duct condition, bends, joints, gradients, lubrication, airflow, pressure rating, cable stiffness and pushing equipment also matter. Use the cable, duct and installation-equipment suppliers’ approved combination; no universal 50–75% window guarantees a 2 km installation.

Prysmian’s Sirocco family includes reduced-coated-diameter fibers and microduct-specific cable designs. Product dimensions and recommended ducts vary by variant and region. A 200 or 180 micrometre coated diameter describes the protective coating envelope; the common 125 micrometre glass dimension is the cladding, not the light-guiding single-mode core.

Reduced coating is not automatic splice compatibility

Check fiber category, mode-field characteristics, stripping and cleaving tools, splicer holders and splice-protector arrangement. Matching the nominal glass cladding diameter is useful but does not replace the applicable splicing procedure or optical loss test.

Power-plus-fiber and broadcast hybrids

For a hybrid microcable, specify conductor current, voltage drop, insulation, fault protection and permitted blowing conditions. For a broadcast camera assembly, match the cable and connector standard to the camera system and power arrangement. Fiber count alone does not guarantee a video format, remote power level or maximum link length.

Inspect, clean and test the complete link

  • Confirm connector and fiber identification, polarity or channel mapping and continuity.
  • Inspect and clean optical end faces using the applicable procedure before mating.
  • Measure insertion loss and, where relevant, return loss at agreed wavelengths with suitable reference methods.
  • Record cable and assembly mechanical/environmental qualification separately from optical checks.
  • Check the installed optical budget including every connector, splice and operating margin.

IEC 61300-3-35 concerns visual inspection of connector end faces for contamination and defects. It does not replace end-face geometry measurement. IEC 61300-3-47 addresses interferometric end-face geometry for PC/APC ferrules; apply it only where appropriate to the selected connector. A clean-looking connector alone does not prove acceptable loss or geometry.

Request traceable assembly records and the exact manufacturer specifications. No unsupported field-delay percentages, blowing-track results or blanket military qualification are claimed here.
