ICEA S-75-381 Mining Cables: Type W, G-GC & SHD-GC Guide

Technical article

Compare Type W, G, G-GC, SHD-GC and MP-GC mining cables by grounding, shielding and duty, with separate checks for MSHA approval and acceptance evidence.

Mining cable type codes describe important construction differences, but the name alone is not an installation approval. Compare the electrical rating, grounding and ground-check arrangement, shielding and mechanical duty before choosing between Type W, Type G, Type G-GC, Type SHD-GC and Type MP-GC.

What ICEA S-75-381 covers

ANSI/ICEA S-75-381 addresses portable and power feeder cables for mines and similar applications. A purchase specification should identify the applicable edition and construction, together with the installation rules and approvals required in the mine’s jurisdiction. A US approval must not be described as a universal legal requirement for every country.

Compare function before comparing price

  • Type W: portable power configurations without a dedicated interstitial ground-check pilot. Verify the selected conductor arrangement and equipment-grounding provision; do not assume every core count provides the same grounding function.
  • Type G: includes grounding conductors in the selected portable-power construction. Grounding is not the same function as a separate ground-check monitoring circuit.
  • Type G-GC: includes a ground-check conductor in addition to the power and grounding conductors. Confirm its size, identification and compatibility with the monitoring system.
  • Type SHD-GC: a shielded heavy-duty family with grounding and ground-check provisions. Select the exact voltage class and construction for the trailing or reeling duty.
  • Type MP-GC: mine power feeder constructions for specified distribution arrangements. Do not infer repeated-flex or vertical-suspension suitability from the designation alone.

Grounding, shielding and ground-check are different functions

Protective grounding, phase shielding and ground-check monitoring work together but are not interchangeable. A ground-check pilot is part of a complete monitoring circuit that includes the relay, termination components, connections and return path. The cable alone does not set the trip threshold, trip time or connector contact sequence.

Do not claim that a particular cable guarantees zero touch voltage, prevents every arc or always trips within 40 ms. The responsible designer must assess grounding, protective-device operation, fault current and the applicable installation requirements. Substitution also requires checking the couplers and termination design.

Illustrative loop resistance — not a protection setting

Assume a 0.5 km one-way run, a pilot resistance of 2.16 Ω/km and two identical grounding conductors each having resistance 0.427 Ω/km, connected in parallel throughout the intended return path. Ignoring connections and other components, the assumed conductor-loop resistance is 0.5 × (2.16 + 0.427/2) = 1.18675 Ω, approximately 1.19 Ω.

This is a circuit example, not a measured SHD-GC cable or an approved monitoring design. Actual operation depends on temperature, connection resistance, termination components and the monitor’s method and limits. The difference between 1.19 Ω and an assumed 4 Ω threshold is not a certified safety margin.

Flexible trailing construction versus a feeder construction

As a manufacturer-specific example, Southwire’s 15 kV SHD-GC specification uses flexible phase conductors, EPR insulation, copper/nylon phase shields, grounding conductors and a ground-check conductor. Its MP-GC feeder example instead uses Class B conductors and copper-tape screens. These references illustrate why two cables with similar voltage and cross-section may have different intended duties; they do not establish TEBAOFLEX product performance.

Obtain the moving bend radius, permitted tension, reel geometry and cycle qualification for any repeatedly moving cable. For feeders, confirm whether the proposed route is fixed, occasionally repositioned, buried or suspended. Do not assign a universal lifetime or a guaranteed number of bends before failure to a construction that has not been tested under the stated conditions.

MSHA flame testing: use the correct procedure

For the electric-cable and splice procedure in 30 CFR 7.407, the power conductors are heated to 400°F (204.4°C), not 150°C, before the specified flame exposure. The acceptance conditions include no more than 240 seconds of burning after flame removal and a charred length no greater than 6 inches for each specimen. These are elements of a complete regulated test procedure, not a substitute for performing or documenting it.

30 CFR 7.407 — electric cables and cable splices

Signaling cables have a separate procedure in 30 CFR 7.408, including a different flame-exposure duration and afterburn limit. Do not combine the two procedures in one generic “MSHA test” table.

Where MSHA approval is required, verify the approval identity and scope against the actual manufacturer and cable construction. A printed standard reference, a sample jacket legend or another manufacturer’s approval is not proof that the offered TEBAOFLEX product is approved. No such approval is asserted in this guide.

What to include in the order and inspection plan

  • Exact cable type, voltage, insulation level and phase/ground/ground-check sizes.
  • Construction drawing, permitted installation and moving conditions, dimensions and tolerances.
  • Ampacity conditions, reel thermal assessment where needed, voltage drop and short-circuit checks.
  • Compatible couplers, grounding and ground-check system details agreed by the responsible designer.
  • Required approval evidence and traceable routine, sample and type-test records, clearly distinguished.
