FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How does Type TC-ER-HL qualify for Class I Division 1 hazardous locations without metal armour?
Under UL 2225 and NEC 501.10(A)(1)(e) / 505.15(B), a non-armoured tray cable with an overall diameter ≤ 1.0 inch (25.4 mm) is approved for Class I Division 1 and Zone 1 if it passes the exact same 2,000 lbf crush and 50 ft-lbf impact tests required for Metal-Clad (MC-HL) cable, includes an equipment grounding conductor, and restricts internal core gas-migration spaces.
Why do offshore drilling rigs and modular skids prefer TC-ER-HL over welded-armour MC-HL?
TC-ER-HL is 25–35 % lighter than aluminium-sheathed MC-HL, bends to 6 × OD (vs 10–12 × OD for corrugated MC-HL), never suffers from armour fatigue cracking on vibrating drilling derricks, and strips in half the time into standard TC-ER-HL barrier cable glands.
When must I still use MC-HL Instrumentation instead of TC-ER-HL?
NEC 501.10(A)(1)(e) caps Type TC-ER-HL in Class I Division 1 at an overall diameter of 1.0 inch (25.4 mm). For high-pair-count home-run trunks (such as 16, 24, or 36 pairs) whose outer diameter exceeds 25.4 mm in Class I Division 1, you must specify MC-HL Instrumentation.
How should the screen and drain wire of TC-ER-HL be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of TC-ER-HL should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
