FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do STS-HV, STS-MT and STS-HT map to the different cable reels on a ship-to-shore (STS) or RMG container crane?
STS-HV (3.6/6 to 12/20 kV, based on DIN VDE 0250-813) feeds the main medium-voltage monospiral gantry travel reel up to 240 m/min, optionally integrating 12 or 24 optical fibres. STS-MT (0.6/1 kV, DIN VDE 0250-814) supplies low-voltage power and multi-core control reels on e-RTGs and boom hoists. STS-HT (0.6/1 kV + FO) adds a central polyaramid strain-relief core for vertical motorized headblock and spreader reels operating up to 300 m/min.
Why does STS-HT use a central polyaramid strain member for vertical spreader reeling?
On a vertical container crane spreader reel, the full suspended weight of 40 to 70 metres of cable plus dynamic hoist acceleration/braking acts directly along the cable axis. Placing a high-modulus polyaramid load-bearing core on the neutral centre axis carries 3,200 to 6,000 N of vertical tension so the surrounding short-lay 2.5 mm² control cores and optical fibres remain strain-free.
What sheave diameter and S-bend spacing are required on high-speed port crane gantry reels?
For STS-HV medium-voltage reeling cables, maintain a minimum bending radius of 12 × OD on the drum barrel and 15 × OD over deflection sheaves. For STS-MT and STS-HT low-voltage cables, the minimum drum bending radius is 6 × OD (7.5 × OD over rollers). Where the cable passes through an S-type directional change, keep at least 20 × OD between pulley centres.
Can STS-HT be used in an unpowered gravity spreader basket instead of a motorized spreader reel?
No. STS-HT is engineered for tensioned winding on a motorized vertical drum. Gravity-fed coiled spreader baskets on ship-to-shore cranes require a dedicated basket-lay cable such as XTRM (N)SHT11Y that is balanced to coil smoothly into a round basket under its own weight.
