FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why do 690 V and 950 V wind turbine generator/converter circuits use 1.8/3 kV rated (N)TMCHXOEU instead of a 0.6/1 kV cable?
Fast-switching IGBT frequency converters and rotor crowbar circuits in DFIG and full-converter wind turbines generate repetitive steep-front voltage reflections (dV/dt peaks reaching 2,200–2,800 V phase-to-earth). Using a 1.8/3 kV cable with an extruded inner semiconducting conductor stress screen ('C') and heavier 3GI3 EPR wall prevents premature partial-discharge aging inside the nacelle loop.
How does (N)TMCHXOEU differ from standard NSGAFÖU 1.8/3 kV?
Standard NSGAFÖU uses a chlorinated polychloroprene (5GM3) outer rubber sheath and standard Class 5 stranding intended for fixed cabinet wiring. (N)TMCHXOEU upgrades both the stranding (to torsion-balanced reverse-lay copper qualified for ±150°/m at -40 °C) and the outer sheath (to a halogen-free low-smoke 'HX-OEU' elastomer passing IEC 60332-3-24 bunched fire testing inside wind towers).
How many parallel single-core (N)TMCHXOEU cables are typically bundled in a wind turbine drip loop?
On a 3–5 MW wind turbine with a 690 V or 1,140 V generator and tower-base transformer/converter, typically 3 to 6 parallel cables per phase (9 to 18 single-core 185–300 mm² cables in total) hang through elastomeric spacer discs in the upper tower torsion loop.
When should we switch from single-core (N)TMCHXOEU to three-core (N)TSCGEHXOEU?
Use single-core (N)TMCHXOEU for 0.6/1 kV, 1.8/3 kV and 3.6/6 kV generator/converter loops. When the step-up transformer is inside the nacelle and the loop voltage is 12/20 kV, 18/30 kV, 20/35 kV or 38/66 kV, use screened three-core (N)TSCGEHXOEU.
