FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between Type PLTC (UL 13) and Type ITC (UL 2250), and why is dual listing advantageous?
Type PLTC (Power-Limited Tray Cable, NEC Article 725) covers Class 2 and Class 3 power-limited signal circuits, whereas Type ITC (Instrumentation Tray Cable, NEC Article 727) covers non-power-limited instrumentation circuits operating at ≤ 150 V and ≤ 5 A (such as solenoid valves and 24 V / 120 V process transmitters). Dual-listing as PLTC-ER / ITC-ER allows a single cable stock to serve both NEC articles.
What does the '-ER' (Exposed Run) suffix allow during field installation?
Standard PLTC or ITC cable must be installed inside rigid metal conduit or raceway whenever it leaves the cable tray to drop down to a field instrument. Because PLTC-ER / ITC-ER passes the severe crush and impact tests of UL 1277, NEC Articles 725.154 and 727.4 permit it to exit the cable tray and run exposed to the field device (supported along building/skid steel or unsupported up to 6 ft) without conduit.
When must I step up from 300 V PLTC-ER / ITC-ER to 600 V TC-ER-HL or MC-HL?
PLTC-ER and ITC-ER are rated 300 V and approved for Class I Division 2 (and intrinsically safe Class I Div 1) hazardous locations. If the specification requires a 600 V insulation rating or non-intrinsically-safe Class I Division 1 / Zone 1 hazardous location approval, specify 600 V TC-ER-HL or MC-HL Instrumentation.
How should the screen and drain wire of PLTC / PLTC-ER / ITC / ITC-ER be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of PLTC / PLTC-ER / ITC / ITC-ER should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
