Why does PROFIBUS DP require a 150 Ω cable with < 30 pF/m mutual capacitance?
PROFIBUS DP runs RS-485 up to 12 Mbps (a 16 MHz fundamental spectrum). Achieving 150 Ω ± 15 Ω and < 30 pF/m requires thick Ø 2.55 mm nitrogen-foamed polyethylene (O2YS) insulation around the 0.64 mm conductors; substituting a standard 120 Ω PVC twisted pair causes severe signal reflection and bus faults above 500 kbps.
What is the difference between the Green and Red cores in PROFIBUS DP?
Per EN 50170 and PNO conventions, the Green conductor is Data Line A (RxD/TxD-N, negative) and the Red conductor is Data Line B (RxD/TxD-P, positive). All FastConnect 9-pin D-Sub and M12 B-coded plugs are color-marked green and red to prevent polarity reversal. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
Why do both solid and drag-chain PROFIBUS DP cables share an 8.0 mm outer diameter?
To fit standard 9-pin D-Sub insulation-displacement (IDC) FastConnect connectors, both the 8.0 mm outer sheath and the 2.55 mm core insulation diameters are standardized. Even the 7-wire flexible and 19-wire drag-chain versions preserve this exact geometry. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
How does baud rate affect maximum PROFIBUS DP segment length?
With solid 1×2×0.64 mm Type A cable, a single repeaterless segment supports 100 m at 3 / 6 / 12 Mbps, 200 m at 1.5 Mbps, 400 m at 500 kbps, 1,000 m at 187.5 kbps, and up to 1,200 m at 9.6 to 93.75 kbps.
