FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the purpose of the profiled elastomeric cradle in MGM 115 Type 11 / 14 / 16?
The central fluted elastomeric cradle sits at the geometric centre of the cable with dedicated scalloped grooves for each power, earth, and pilot core. When a shuttle car or roof fall compresses the cable, the resilient rubber cradle absorbs the load and prevents adjacent phase cores from pinching together.
How do Type 11, Type 14, and Type 16 differ under BS 6708 and SANS 1520-1?
Type 14 has three individually screened power cores, one earth core, and one pilot core laid around the cradle. Type 11 incorporates two pilot cores for dual-loop control/interlock circuits, while Type 16 provides five individually screened main cores plus a pilot core for multi-motor coal-face equipment.
Why are the core screens braided from both tinned copper wires and nylon cords?
A pure copper wire braid suffers fatigue breakage when flexed thousands of times around small shuttle-car sheaves and Bretby links. Interweaving tinned copper wires with high-tenacity nylon cords creates a self-supporting composite screen that resists strand breakage. Each production drum undergoes routine dielectric voltage testing, conductor DC resistance verification, and sheath dimensional inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate.
How does MGM 115 Type 11/14/16 compare with MGM 115 Type 7/7M/7S?
Type 11/14/16 uses an insulating or semi-conductive elastomeric cradle at the centre with the earth conductor placed in one of the outer interstitial grooves, whereas Type 7/7M/7S places a large uninsulated or semi-conductive copper earth conductor directly at the centre of the cable. Each production drum undergoes routine dielectric voltage testing, conductor DC resistance verification, and sheath dimensional inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate.
