FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why is the protective earth conductor placed at the geometric centre in MGM 115 Type 7 / 7M / 7S?
Placing the protective earth conductor along the neutral axis of the cable means it undergoes zero tensile extension or compression when the cable bends in any direction. In addition, all three screened phase cores and the pilot core maintain continuous radial contact with the central earth.
What is the difference between Type 7, Type 7M, and Type 7S?
Type 7 is the standard unarmoured screened coal-cutter cable with a textile-reinforced HD-PCP sheath. Type 7M adds a flexible galvanized steel strand braid armour between the inner and outer sheaths for severe crush protection, while Type 7S adds an overall copper/nylon collective screen. Each production drum undergoes routine dielectric voltage testing, conductor DC resistance verification, and sheath dimensional inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate.
Are MGM 115 Type 7 cables directly compatible with British Coal BS 6708 couplers and glands?
Yes. The core layout, central earth geometry, composite copper/nylon phase screens, and outer sheath diameters match BS 6708 and SANS 1520-1 dimensional tables for restrained coal-face plugs and gate-end sockets. Each production drum undergoes routine dielectric voltage testing, conductor DC resistance verification, and sheath dimensional inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate.
How does earth-leakage fault detection operate in Type 7 cables?
Each EPR-insulated phase core is wrapped with semi-conductive rubber tape and a tinned copper/nylon braid that sits in direct contact with the central earth conductor, ensuring any insulation breakdown or foreign-object penetration immediately triggers the gate-end earth-fault relay. Each production drum undergoes routine dielectric voltage testing, conductor DC resistance verification, and sheath dimensional inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate.
