FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does a CICC use a 6-petal rope around a central spiral inside a compacted steel tube?
In a large 45–68 kA fusion magnet, pool-boiling liquid helium cannot penetrate a dense winding pack fast enough to prevent thermal quench, and Lorentz forces (I × B ≈ 800 kN/m) would crush unreinforced copper/superconductor strands. The CICC architecture bathes every 0.8 mm strand in forced-flow supercritical helium (30 % void fraction) fed from the low-impedance central spiral, while the heavy-wall AISI 316LN conduit carries the structural Lorentz load.
Why are Nb₃Sn strands plated with 1–2 µm of Chromium and NbTi strands plated with Nickel?
During pulsed magnet operation (dB/dt), inter-strand eddy-current loops would generate excessive AC heating if bare copper surfaces sintered together during compaction or the +650 °C Nb₃Sn reaction bake. A 1–2 µm Cr (or Ni) barrier prevents diffusion bonding and maintains optimal inter-strand contact resistance.
Why must the void fraction of a Nb₃Sn CICC be held tightly around 29–33 %?
Nb₃Sn is a strain-sensitive A15 intermetallic compound. If the void fraction is too high (> 36 %), electromagnetic Lorentz loads bend and buckle individual strands under cyclic pulsing, permanently degrading critical current (I_c). If the void fraction is too low (< 27 %), strands are over-pinched during compaction and hydraulic pressure drop rises sharply.
What factory routine tests and certificates are supplied with CICC Superconducting Conductor?
Every production drum of CICC Superconducting Conductor undergoes 100 % conductor DC resistance measurement at 20 °C, high-voltage AC/DC dielectric withstand testing, and dimensional verification per IEC 61788-1 / IEC 61788-2 / ITER Magnet Design Criteria, supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate.
