FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why does BS 6883 Type A use a wire-braid armour instead of single-wire armour (SWA)?
On offshore platforms and FPSOs, cables must route through tight bulkhead penetrations, multi-cable transit (MCT) frames, and vibrating module skids at a 6×D bending radius. Flexible 0.30/0.45 mm galvanized steel or phosphor-bronze wire-braid armour provides 360° impact and gland-clamping strength without the stiffness of heavy SWA wires.
Why is phosphor-bronze (PBWB) or tinned-copper (TCWB) wire braid mandatory on 1-core BS 6883 Type A cables?
Surrounding a single-phase AC conductor with magnetic galvanized steel wire braid would cause intense magnetic hysteresis heating and voltage drop. BS 6883 specifies non-magnetic phosphor-bronze or tinned-copper wire braid on all single-core Type A cables. Each production drum undergoes 100 % conductor DC resistance
Why does BS 6883 Type A include an extruded elastomeric inner bedding beneath the wire braid?
In Zone 1 and Zone 2 offshore hazardous areas, Ex d flameproof and Ex e increased-safety cable glands must form a gas-tight seal on the inner bedding beneath the wire-braid armour. Extruding a solid concentric elastomeric bedding ensures circular gland compression. Each production drum
How do UKOOA codes relate to BS 6883 Type A cables?
The UK Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA) assigned a standardized 5-character alphanumeric code to every BS 6883 configuration (for example, 'YD' for 3-core 0.6/1 kV Type A GSWB and 'YE' for 4-core Type A GSWB), allowing EPC contractors and platform operators to cross-reference exact cable dimensions.
