Application fit

Is BRUsens DSS V3 / V4 / V9 right for your machine?

Periodic external ribs/indentations on V3, V4 and V9 create a positive mechanical form-lock in concrete, cement grout and compacted soil without relying on chemical adhesives.

Fixed installation

Suitable

Cast directly into concrete slabs, bored piles, grouted rock bolts, and compacted soil trenches.

TBM gantry & advancing tunnel reel

Suitable

Embeds in shotcrete linings and backfill grout to track tunnel convergence and crack opening.

Immersion & wet locations

Suitable

V3 and V9 incorporate a hermetically laser-welded 316L stainless FIMT for saturated ground.

Energy chain / drag chain

Not suitable

Static structural sensor designed to lock into concrete or soil; not for moving cable chains.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How do the V3, V4 and V9 profiles differ in construction and application?
DSS V4 (Ø 4.0 mm) is an all-dielectric low-stiffness (EA 25 kN) ribbed cable ideal for soft soil movement and early-age concrete crack detection. DSS V3 (Ø 4.6 mm) adds a central 316L stainless-steel FIMT for grouted boreholes and concrete structures. DSS V9 (Ø 6.0 mm) adds steel wire reinforcement (EA 220 kN) for rugged pile and rock-bolt installations.
Why does a concrete-embedded strain cable need a ribbed outer sheath?
A smooth polymer jacket can debond and slide inside concrete once micro-cracks form, smearing the strain peak over several metres. The periodic ribs on DSS V3, V4 and V9 mechanically lock into the cement matrix so sub-millimetre crack openings are accurately localised.
Can DSS V3/V4/V9 measure both tensile crack opening and compressive concrete creep?
Yes. Because the optical fibre is pre-strained and locked inside the carrier during manufacture, it measures both compressive strain (down to -10,000 µε) and tensile elongation (up to +10,000 µε).
What drum lengths are supplied for dam and tunnel projects?
We supply continuous lengths of 500 m, 1,000 m, 2,000 m and up to 4,000 m on wooden drums.
