A subsea umbilical can combine electrical cables, optical fibres, hoses and metal tubes. Hydrostatic acceptance must address the components and interfaces actually supplied. A single pressure test does not establish fatigue life, electrical qualification and termination strength simultaneously.
Confirm the governing scope
ISO 13628-5 addresses subsea umbilicals and associated ancillary equipment for petroleum and natural-gas production, including static and dynamic routings. Its scope has component and voltage limitations; it is not a blanket standard for every high-voltage dynamic export cable or every towed array. Confirm the applicable edition and any complementary project requirements before preparing the inspection and test plan.
Similarly, DNV-ST-E407 concerns rope-based deployment and recovery systems for designated service. Its title is not a general certificate for all subsea umbilicals. If third-party verification is required, specify the exact standard, assembly boundary, documents, witness points and deliverables.
Distinguish internal and external pressure
- Internal hose or tube pressure verifies the relevant fluid component and its fittings.
- External hydrostatic pressure challenges the complete exposed construction and penetrations.
- Longitudinal water penetration assesses migration along a defined damaged or exposed path.
- Pressure cycling and decompression may introduce different mechanisms from a single static hold.
Illustrative calculation only: with seawater density assumed as 1025 kg/m³, g = 9.81 m/s² and depth 4000 m, hydrostatic gauge pressure is approximately 40.2 MPa. A hypothetical multiplier of 1.5 would give 60.3 MPa. That multiplier is not prescribed here: the applicable component, design and qualification requirements determine the actual test pressure and safety arrangements.
Define the acceptance sequence
Record specimen or assembly identity and initial electrical, optical and dimensional measurements. The approved procedure should state fluid, pressure reference, temperature, ramp, hold, cycling and controlled depressurization, with measurable acceptance criteria. Representative terminations and penetrators must be included where their behavior affects the qualified system.
Optical results should identify fibre type, wavelength, reference arrangement and measurement uncertainty. Electrical withstand and partial-discharge tests, where applicable, need the correct product requirements; there is no universal voltage or pC limit for every umbilical. Stable optical loss alone does not prove that internal strain or every defect is absent.
Separate design verification from production FAT
Design verification demonstrates a defined construction under specified conditions. Production FAT checks conformity of the delivered assembly. The plan should identify which tests apply to every supplied length, which use samples and which rely on existing qualification. Document how construction changes affect that evidence.
Request calibrated records, actual measured results, anomalies, concessions and witness signatures tied to the assembly. A class logo or inspection-document label is not enough. All pressure and high-voltage work must remain within an approved laboratory or factory safety procedure.
