What the designation does—and does not—tell you
2YSLGCGÖU is associated with screened, rubber-sheathed mining control and signalling cable constructions using polyethylene insulation. It is a useful starting point for a technical enquiry, not a complete guarantee of voltage, capacitance, motion capability or fieldbus compliance. Obtain the manufacturer’s exact drawing and data sheet for the proposed core or pair configuration.
For example, Prysmian’s PROTOMONT (MSR) documentation identifies a 2YSLGCGOEU 250 V product with PE-insulated cores arranged in pairs, rubber inner sheath and screening for mining signalling duties. PROTOMONT is that manufacturer’s brand, not a TEBAOFLEX series. Do not rewrite this reference as a universal 300/500 V rating or transfer its parameters to another supplier’s cable.
Why combine PE insulation with an elastomer sheath?
The insulation and outer protection perform different jobs. PE can be selected for useful dielectric properties; the outer elastomer can be selected for handling and environmental resistance. An inner sheath can separate and support the screened core assembly. The resulting performance depends on dimensions, compounds, pair geometry and manufacturing controls, not only the material names.
Capacitance must state its measurement arrangement and frequency: pair-to-pair, conductor-to-conductor and conductor-to-screen values are not interchangeable. A dielectric constant alone cannot establish characteristic impedance. Obtain impedance, attenuation, resistance and other transmission parameters over the frequencies relevant to the intended interface.
RS-485 reach is a network property
RS-485 distance depends on data rate, cable resistance and losses, driver characteristics, receiver loading, termination, topology, stubs and the noise environment. Lower capacitance may help a design, but halving capacitance does not automatically double usable distance. A 1,200 m headline is not a guarantee at 115.2 kbps for every screened control cable.
A numbered multicore cable is not automatically a controlled-impedance twisted-pair bus cable. Identify the actual protocol: RS-485, PROFIBUS, CAN and analogue current loops have different requirements. Match the cable and connectors to that network’s installation rules, then validate signal quality under the intended length, node count, load and operating conditions.
For a long conveyor, document the topology before buying drums. Include cabinet entries, junctions, spare branches and surge exposure. If the link margin is insufficient, assess repeaters, segmenting or fibre according to the system design rather than promising that a different insulation material alone will solve it.
Mining movement and environment
Fixed installation, occasional flexing, festoon travel, continuous reeling and torsion are separate duties. A rubber sheath and fine-stranded conductor do not prove suitability for all of them. Specify bend radius, tension, acceleration, travel, temperature and expected duty cycle; confirm the supplied cable has evidence for that use.
Fixed, installation and moving temperature limits may differ. Review cold handling, UV, oils, water, abrasive fines and mechanical impact for the actual compound. Do not assume all PVC cable cracks at −15°C, or that all rubber-screened cable survives a specified rock impact. Add guards or routing protection where the cable cannot safely absorb the anticipated damage.
Screen bonding and commissioning
Coordinate screen termination with the network’s EMC plan and the machine’s equipotential bonding and protective earthing. Do not use a small capacitor as a generic substitute for a required protective or bonding conductor. Keep power and signal routing separated as required by the installation design rather than applying an unsupported universal 300 mm rule.
- Confirm conductor/pair identification, rated voltage, resistance and transmission data on the order.
- Match glands, clamps and strain relief to the cable diameter, sheath and permitted loading.
- Inspect the route and terminations, then test the installed communications link at its intended settings.
- Request traceable routine and qualification reports; a proposed test schedule is not evidence that a batch has passed.
