FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What do the letters TTY, TTYC, and TTYCY stand for under JIS C 3410?
In the JIS C 3410 shipboard designation code, 'TT' denotes a 250 V telephone/telegraph communication cable with 90 °C EPR rubber core insulation, 'Y' denotes the PVC sheath, 'C' adds a galvanized steel or tinned copper wire-braid armour over the sheath, and the final 'Y' in TTYCY adds an outer protective PVC oversheath over the armour.
How does TTY differ from TTPY shipboard communication cable?
TTY uses 90 °C cross-linked ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) core insulation for higher thermal margin in hot machinery spaces, whereas TTPY uses 75 °C polyethylene ('P') core insulation for lower dielectric capacitance (≤ 55 nF/km) and lower high-frequency attenuation on long telephone and serial audio trunks.
When should I specify galvanized steel wire braid vs. tinned copper wire braid on TTYC/TTYCY?
Galvanized steel wire braid (GSWB) provides maximum mechanical impact and rodent/crush protection along engine rooms and cargo holds. Non-magnetic tinned copper wire braid (TCWB) is specified within the wheelhouse magnetic-compass safe-distance zone and where enhanced high-frequency EMI shielding is required. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
Are pairs laid up as twisted pairs (P) or star-quads (Q) in JIS C 3410 TTY cables?
JIS C 3410 allows both: 1-pair (1P) cables are twisted pairs, while 2-pair (1Q) through 38-pair (19Q) cables are traditionally laid up as space-saving 4-core star-quads (White/Red = Pair 1, Yellow/Blue = Pair 2) or as individual twisted pairs per shipyard specification. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
