FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Why does a Resolver Feedback Cable require individually screened pairs — such as 3×(2×0.14)C + (2×0.5)C?
A brushless resolver is an analogue rotary transformer excited by a 4 to 10 kHz AC reference voltage (typically 7 V rms on R1/R2) that induces ratiometric voltages in the Sine (S1/S3) and Cosine (S2/S4) stator windings. Any capacitive cross-talk from the excitation pair or the stator thermal sensor pair (KTY84/PTC) into the millivolt-level Sin/Cos pairs introduces a false angular offset in the drive's resolver-to-digital (R/D) converter. Individual copper screens around each pair eliminate inter-pair coupling.
Why must the Sine and Cosine pairs have matched capacitance and loop resistance?
The servo drive determines rotor angle θ from the ratio arctan(V_sin / V_cos). If the Sine and Cosine pairs have different capacitances or loop resistances, they form unequal R-C low-pass filters over long cable runs, attenuating or phase-shifting one channel relative to the other and causing periodic velocity ripple.
Why is the stator temperature sensor pair (0.5 mm²) also individually screened?
The PTC thermistor or KTY84 silicon temperature sensor is embedded directly inside the 400 V / 690 V stator windings of the servo motor. Capacitive spikes from the stator windings couple onto the sensor leads; screening the (2×0.5)C pair prevents that PWM noise from radiating into the adjacent Sin/Cos resolver pairs inside the feedback cable.
When should I step up from 0.14 mm² resolver pairs to 0.25 mm² or 0.38 mm²?
Standard 0.14 mm² (AWG 26) resolver cables are suitable for cable lengths up to 30–35 m. For drag-chain or gantry runs from 35 m up to 100 m, step up to 3×(2×0.25)C or 4×2×0.38 so series loop resistance does not drop the 7 V rms excitation carrier below the R/D converter threshold.
