FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How does a radiating leaky feeder cable (RADIAFLEX) work in a tunnel?
Instead of a completely sealed outer shield, RADIAFLEX features CNC-milled periodic slot groups along its copper outer conductor. A controlled fraction of the RF energy travelling inside the coaxial core couples out through the slots along the entire tunnel length (and mobile uplink signals couple back in), creating a continuous linear antenna without blind spots around tunnel curves or train roofs.
What is 'coupling loss' and 'longitudinal loss' in IEC 61196-4?
Longitudinal attenuation (dB/100m) is the RF power lost per 100 m along the cable core, while coupling loss (dB, quoted at 50 % and 95 % reception probability at 2 m distance) is the path loss between the cable core and a dipole antenna 2 m away from the cable wall. Total link budget at distance L equals (Longitudinal Loss × L) + Coupling Loss.
When should I select 7/8-inch RCF78-50 versus 1/2-inch RCF12-50?
Select 7/8-inch RCF78-50 (or 1-1/4" / 1-5/8") for main railway, metro, and highway tunnel bores where low longitudinal attenuation (4.1 dB/100m @ 900 MHz) maximizes repeater spacing; select 1/2-inch RCF12-50 for station platforms, cross-passages, mine drifts, and building stairwells.
Why is the longitudinal print stripe important during tunnel installation?
The radiating slots are milled along one side of the outer copper conductor beneath the alignment stripe; installers orient the stripe facing away from the concrete tunnel wall toward the train or roadway clearance envelope to prevent wall reflection loss.
