What do the letters LSDCOP and LSTCOP stand for in MIL-DTL-24643/3?
'LS' stands for Low-Smoke (zero-halogen cross-linked polyolefin, replacing the legacy chlorinated MIL-C-915 DCOP/TCOP cords); 'D' stands for Double conductor (2 cores) and 'T' stands for Triple conductor (3 cores); 'COP' stands for Cord, Oil-resistant, Portable. The trailing number (e.g. LSTCOP-40) indicates the approximate conductor cross-section in thousands of circular mils (40 ≈ 40,000 cmil = 4 AWG).
Why must portable shipboard cords be longitudinally watertight ('UN' / WT)?
When a portable or semi-permanent cable passes through a watertight bulkhead stuffing tube between ship compartments, an unblocked cable core could act as a hose and flood an adjacent compartment if one space is breached below the waterline. LSDCOP and LSTCOP fill all internal interstices so water cannot migrate along the cable core.
How does LSDCOP/LSTCOP differ from LSDSGU/LSTSGU and LSDPS/LSTPS?
LSDCOP/LSTCOP (M24643/3) are flexible portable cords for deck equipment and shore jumpers; LSDSGU/LSTSGU (M24643/15 & /16) are fixed shipboard power feeder cables; and LSDPS/LSTPS (M24643/32 & /33) are 1,000–1,500 psi high-pressure submarine hull-penetration cables.
