What is 'cable hosing' on a submarine and how do LSDPS / LSTPS / LSFPS / LS7PS prevent it?
If an outboard cable in the free-flooding sail or ballast tank is damaged at deep diving depth (e.g. 500–1,000 psi seawater pressure), water can be forced at high velocity through the microscopic air gaps between copper strands or between insulated cores right through the hull penetration into the manned pressure hull ('hosing'). PS-series submarine cables block every individual wire strand and every core interstice with cured elastomeric sealant and reinforce the outer jacket like a high-pressure hydraulic hose.
How does a 'Pressure-Tight' (PS) cable differ from a standard 'Watertight' (WT / UN) shipboard cable?
Standard Watertight (WT) surface-ship cables (such as LSDSGU or LSTCOP) are tested against low-head compartment flooding (typically 5–25 psi) between bulkheads. Pressure-Tight Submarine (PS) cables (LSDPS, LSTPS, LSFPS, LS7PS) are engineered and hydrostatic-tested for deep-ocean diving pressures of 500 to 1,500 psi.
Why is outer diameter concentricity critical on LSDPS and LSTPS cables?
Submarine hull penetrations use high-pressure compression stuffing tubes or moulded neoprene/polyurethane bulkhead glands. Any ovality or core-valley sink marks on the cable jacket would prevent a 1,500 psi radial seal.
What factory routine tests and certificates are supplied with LSDPS / LSTPS / LSFPS / LS7PS?
Every production drum of LSDPS / LSTPS / LSFPS / LS7PS undergoes 100 % conductor DC resistance measurement at 20 °C, high-voltage AC/DC dielectric withstand testing, and dimensional verification per MIL-DTL-24643/32, /33, /34 & /71 / NAVSEA Submarine Spec, supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate.
