FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

How can glass optical fibres survive a 750–1000 °C fire when standard loose-tube cables fail in minutes?
In standard plastic loose-tube cables, melting PBT tubes and shrinking jackets buckle the glass fibres and cause severe micro-bending loss. HITRONIC FIRE houses the fibres inside a laser-welded stainless-steel / mica-protected tube surrounded by E-glass yarn and corrugated steel armour so the fibres remain mechanically stress-free at 850–1000 °C.
What does IEC 60331-25 verify on fire-resistant fibre optic cables?
IEC 60331-25 exposes a horizontal specimen of the optical cable to a ≥750 °C ribbon burner flame for up to 180 minutes (FE180) while continuously monitoring optical power attenuation at 1310/1550 nm (single-mode) or 850/1300 nm (multimode) to verify uninterrupted transmission.
Should OS2 single-mode or OM3/OM4 multimode be chosen for fire alarm panel ring networks?
Choose OS2 (9/125 µm single-mode) when networked Fire Alarm Control Panels (FACPs), tunnel ventilation PLCs or metro station nodes are separated by more than 500 m (up to 10–40 km). Choose OM3 or OM4 (50/125 µm multimode) for building risers and campus rings under 500 m.
Does the corrugated steel tape armour protect against rodents in tunnels and cable ducts?
Yes. The overlapped longitudinal corrugated steel tape (CST) plus dense E-glass roving layer forms a 100 % rodent-proof barrier and provides ≥3000 N/100 mm crush resistance without requiring external steel conduit.
