FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why are Diver Umbilical components planetary-cabled together instead of taped in parallel?
Taping hoses and cables in parallel causes individual members to buckle and kink when coiled into a dive basket or pulled around subsea structures. Planetary helical cabling equalises path length across every bend and makes the umbilical torque-balanced and easy to figure-eight on deck.
When should I choose a floating versus a sinking surface-supplied diver umbilical?
Floating umbilicals (negative weight in seawater) are used in shallow civil, dam, or harbour diving where the seabed is littered with debris that could snag a trailing line. Sinking umbilicals are preferred in offshore vessel diving so the umbilical stays clear of vessel thrusters and surface currents.
How are distance marks applied to comply with IMCA D 014?
Standard IMCA colour-coded whipping bands or heat-shrink markers are permanently applied at the diver end and every 5 m and 10 m interval along the entire umbilical length so the dive supervisor and tender can read paid-out length instantly.
Can damaged electrical or hose components be replaced in the field?
On whipped cabled umbilicals, individual colour-coded hoses or the communications/video cable can be unlaid and replaced by a qualified technician without scrapping the entire umbilical, provided the replacement passes hydrostatic and electrical re-certification per IMCA D 018.
