FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between DeviceNet Thick and DeviceNet Thin cable?
DeviceNet Thick (OD 12.2 mm) uses 15 AWG power cores (8 A capacity) and 18 AWG 120 Ω data cores to support main trunks up to 500 m at 125 kbps, 250 m at 250 kbps, or 100 m at 500 kbps. DeviceNet Thin (OD 6.9 mm) uses 22 AWG power (3 A) and 24 AWG data cores for 6 m drop lines and short trunks up to 100 m.
Why are both the data pair and the power pair individually foil-shielded inside a DeviceNet cable?
Because DeviceNet carries 24 V DC solenoid and sensor power alongside high-speed CAN data in the same jacket, wrapping both the Blue/White data pair and the Red/Black power pair in separate 100 % Al/PET foils prevents 24 V load-switching transients from coupling into CAN_H and CAN_L.
What is the standard ODVA wire colour assignment for DeviceNet 5-pin connectors?
Every ODVA 5-pin Mini-C (7/8-inch) and Micro-C (M12) connector uses the identical 5-wire sequence: Pin 1 = Bare Drain/Shield, Pin 2 = Red (+24 V DC V+), Pin 3 = Black (0 V DC V-), Pin 4 = White (CAN_H), and Pin 5 = Blue (CAN_L).
Can DeviceNet Thick or Thin cables be installed in continuous drag chains?
Standard PVC CL2/PLTC DeviceNet cables are designed for fixed raceways and trays. For moving gantries and energy chains, specify our DeviceNet Drag-Chain PUR versions, which use Class 6 extra-fine tinned copper strands and an oil-resistant polyurethane sheath rated for ≥ 5 million cycles. Each production reel undergoes 100 % characteristic impedance verification, mutual capacitance and DC loop resistance testing, and dielectric spark/withstand inspection before dispatch with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
