FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

How does a Concentric Tri-Axial three-phase HTS cable save 50 % of the superconducting tape compared to three single-phase cores?
In a conventional 3-in-1 Triad HTS cable, each of the three phase conductors requires its own equal-current superconducting return shield to block eddy-current heating in the steel cryostat (6 superconducting layers total). In a Concentric Tri-Axial cable, Phases L1, L2 and L3 are wound coaxially on a single former separated by lapped PPLP insulation. Because the three balanced phase currents sum vectorially to zero (I₁ + I₂ + I₃ = 0), their magnetic fields self-cancel outside Phase L3 without needing three separate superconducting return shields.
Why is the liquid nitrogen pressurized and subcooled (67–77 K at 3–15 bar) instead of boiling at 1 bar?
If liquid nitrogen were allowed to boil into nitrogen gas bubbles inside the high-voltage PPLP insulation, the lower permittivity and lower breakdown strength of gas bubbles would trigger partial discharge. Pressurizing subcooled LN₂ above 3 bar keeps it 100 % single-phase liquid along the entire cable route.
What happens to a Three-Phase HTS Power Cable during a 25–40 kA grid short-circuit fault?
When fault current exceeds the critical current of the REBCO tapes, the superconductor transitions to its normal resistive state within milliseconds and automatically commutates the fault current into the parallel copper stabilizer layers, riding through the 0.5–1.0 s breaker clearing time without damage.
What factory routine tests and certificates are supplied with Three-Phase HTS Power Cable?
Every production drum of Three-Phase HTS Power Cable undergoes 100 % conductor DC resistance measurement at 20 °C, high-voltage AC/DC dielectric withstand testing, and dimensional verification per IEC 62895 / IEC 61788-26 / IEEE 1726 / CIGRE TB 538, supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate.
