Application fit

Is CORC Cable right for your machine?

Solves the fundamental mechanical limitation of flat REBCO 2G HTS tapes (which cannot bend edgewise) by winding 18 to 48 tapes helically around a flexible round copper core, creating an isotropic round conductor that bends in any plane and operates in fields up to 25 T or in 50–77 K helium/nitrogen.

Fixed installation

Suitable

Wound into tight-radius (< 35 mm) canted-cosine-theta (CCT) dipole magnets, compact tokamak coils and high-field insert solenoids.

Immersion & wet locations

Suitable

Operates in liquid helium (4.2 K), supercritical helium (20 K) or subcooled liquid nitrogen (65–77 K) dewar/cryostat loops.

Offshore platform & shipboard deck trays

Suitable

Used for high-power-density shipboard degaussing, electric aircraft propulsion buses and naval pulse-power links at 50–77 K.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why can a CORC cable bend to a 25–50 mm radius in any direction when a flat REBCO tape cannot bend in-plane?
In a CORC cable, narrow (2–4 mm) REBCO tapes with thin (30 µm) Hastelloy C-276 substrates are wound helically at ~45° around a round core without bonding between layers. When the cable is bent in any direction, the tapes slide slightly and experience pure axial tension/compression below the 0.5 % irreversible strain limit of REBCO.
Why is REBCO CORC used above 14–16 Tesla instead of Nb₃Sn CICC?
The upper critical magnetic field (B_c2) of Nb₃Sn drops rapidly to zero around 24–27 T at 4.2 K, limiting practical Nb₃Sn magnets to ~13–16 T. REBCO has an irreversible field exceeding 100 T at 4.2 K, allowing CORC cables to maintain 300–650 A/mm² engineering current density at 20–25 T.
How are low-resistance joints made to all 30–48 layers of a CORC cable?
At the cable ends, each helical REBCO layer is trimmed in a stepped staircase taper so every tape layer makes direct electrical contact with a precision-machined OFHC copper terminal sleeve vacuum-soldered with low-melting InBi or SnPb solder, achieving joint resistance below 2–5 nΩ.
What factory routine tests and certificates are supplied with CORC Cable?
Every production drum of CORC Cable undergoes 100 % conductor DC resistance measurement at 20 °C, high-voltage AC/DC dielectric withstand testing, and dimensional verification per IEC 61788-26 / DOE High-Field Magnet Program, supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate.
