FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

What is the difference between BS 5308 Part 1 and BS 5308 Part 2?
BS 5308 Part 1 specifies Polyethylene (PE) or Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) core insulation for low mutual capacitance (≤ 75–115 pF/m) and high insulation resistance (≥ 5000 MΩ·km), originally developed for petrochemical and oil-refinery plants. BS 5308 Part 2 specifies PVC core insulation (≤ 250 pF/m) for general process and chemical industry installations.
What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 in BS 5308 Part 1?
Type 1 is unarmoured (PE/XLPE cores, CAM or ICAM screen, and PVC or LSZH outer sheath) for indoor and sheltered tray routing. Type 2 adds an extruded inner bedding, Galvanised Steel Wire Armour (SWA), and an outer sheath (plus an optional lead or polyamide moisture/hydrocarbon barrier) for direct burial and heavy mechanical duty.
How does BS 5308 core colour identification differ from EN 50288-7?
BS 5308 pairs use Black and Blue cores with printed pair numbers (and Black, Blue, Brown for triples), whereas EN 50288-7 (RE-2Y(st)Y) uses Black and White numbered cores (Black, White, Red for triples).
How should the screen and drain wire of BS 5308 Part 1 Type 1 be earthed in instrumentation and Ex-i loops?
To prevent circulating 50/60 Hz ground-loop currents from coupling into millivolt or 4–20 mA signals, the Al/PET screen and tinned copper drain wire of BS 5308 Part 1 Type 1 should be bonded to the clean instrumentation earth bar at one end only (typically in the control/marshalling cabinet) and insulated against chassis contact at the field transmitter or junction box, in accordance with IEC 60079-14 and EN 50288-7.
