FAQ

Questions engineers ask first

Not covered here? Send your drawing — an engineer replies within 2 business hours.

Why do physicists prefer Manganin (WMW) over Constantan (Cu55Ni45) for low-voltage cryogenic measurements?
Although both Constantan and Manganin have low thermal conductivity and flat resistance vs temperature, Constantan has a huge thermoelectric (Seebeck) coefficient against copper (~40 µV/K—in fact, Copper/Constantan is a Type T thermocouple!). Any slight temperature asymmetry where Constantan wires meet copper terminals creates tens of microvolts of DC offset error. Manganin against copper has a thermal EMF < 1.5 µV/K (~0.6 µV/K typical), eliminating thermal offset drift.
Does Manganin exhibit any magnetic behaviour below 4 K?
Because Manganin contains 12 % Manganese and 2 % Nickel, it undergoes a spin-glass magnetic transition below ~40 K that can introduce slight low-temperature magnetoresistance or susceptibility in ultra-sensitive SQUID pick-up loops. For strictly zero-susceptibility wiring near SQUIDs or in 20 T magnets, use Phosphor-Bronze (WDT/WQT).
Why is Manganin wire also used inside high-pressure Diamond Anvil Cells (DACs) and shock-wave gauges?
Manganin combines a near-zero temperature coefficient of resistance (±15 ppm/K at ambient) with a well-calibrated, linear positive pressure coefficient of resistance (+2.3 × 10⁻⁶ / bar), allowing direct electrical measurement of gigapascal (GPa) pressures.
How do you strip and solder Polyimide vs Polyurethane-Nylon enamelled Manganin?
Polyurethane-Nylon (MW 28-C) enamel is heat-strippable directly with a +380 °C soldering iron droplet. Heavy Polyimide (MW 16-C) will not melt under a soldering iron and should be stripped with a precision mechanical blade/tweezers or chemical stripper before soldering with RMA rosin flux.
