Application fit

Is HVWW right for your machine?

Allows 3.3 kV to 13.8 kV submersible pump, thruster and subsea compressor motors to run directly cooled by internal water/glycol or oil without canned-stator losses.

Immersion & wet locations

Suitable

Directly immersed in de-ionized water + propylene glycol inside wet-wound stator slots at hydrostatic pressures up to 400 bar.

Motor stator, traction & converter leads

Suitable

Tough polyamide (PA) outer gliding skin or PEEK wall resists stator slot-wedge abrasion during pull-in coil winding.

FAQ

How does a 'wet-wound' submersible motor stator work, and why can't ordinary enamelled magnet wire be used?
In a wet-wound submersible motor, the stator slots are flooded with clean water/glycol coolant that circulates directly around every turn of the winding to carry heat to the pump casing. Ordinary enamelled magnet wire has a thin 0.05–0.10 mm varnish film that absorbs moisture and breaks down almost immediately when immersed in conductive water. HVWW uses a thick, pinhole-free 0.90 mm to 4.10 mm extruded TR-XLPE, PP or PEEK wall where the surrounding water acts as the grounded outer electrode along the entire wire length.
When should I upgrade from PE2-PA (≤ 1,000 V) to HVWW (3.3 kV – 13.8 kV)?
Above ~250–400 kW pump power, low-voltage (400–1,000 V) submersible motors require impractically thick drop cables and multiple parallel stator windings. Stepping the motor voltage up to 3.3 kV, 6.6 kV, 11 kV or 13.8 kV slashes current by 5–15×, allowing smaller downhole/caisson power cables—and requires HVWW high-voltage wet-winding wire.
Why do 6.6 kV, 11 kV and 13.8 kV HVWW-SC wires include an outer semiconductive layer?
In a water-filled stator slot, if air bubbles form or during dry shop testing before filling with water, high voltage across an unscreened wire surface causes slot corona (partial discharge) in the air gap between the wire and laminated stator iron. An outer semiconductive layer keeps the wire's outer surface clamped at ground potential against the slot wall.
When is PEEK-insulated HVWW-PEEK required instead of TR-XLPE/PA?
Specify HVWW-PEEK when internal motor coolant temperatures exceed +90 °C (up to +180 °C), when stator slot space is extremely tight (PEEK's higher dielectric strength allows a thinner wall and higher copper slot fill), or in high-pressure subsea/geothermal motors.
